Itinerary
D1: Cagliari Cagliari Meet at the group hotel in Cagliari Briefing of the retreat and free time D2: Ulassai – Santa Maria Navarrese Transfer from Cagliari to Ulassai (1h30 drive). Visit of the museum “la stazione dell’arte” of Maria Lai, a Sardinian artist well known in the world of contemporary art. Visit of the town and of the Open-Air Museum. Lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit of the beautiful cave of Su Marmuri and meeting with a local artisan who creates carpets, curtains and tapestries using some artistic elements of Maria Lai. At the end of the visit, transfer to Santa Maria Navarrese. Free time for dinner D3: Gorroppu Gorge Hike Beautiful hike to the incredible Gola di Gorropu (karst canyon), the second largest canyon in Europe, in the Supramonte Mountains. After breakfast we take a brief transfer through orchards and vineyards to the start of the Flumineddu Valley in the heart of the Supramonte di Oliena Mountains. Located in the Gennargentu National Park, this dramatic landscape is home to Sardinian wildcat, wild boar, mouflon, dormouse, weasel and fox, plus birds of prey which include Golden Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Sardinian Hawk, Sparrow Hawk and the Corsican Butterfly Swallowtail. Established in 1998 the national park houses a rich variety of flora including holm oak, maple and endemic shrubs. The gorge contains small sections of scrambling which are non-technical and the leader will explain in more detail. The Gorroppu Gorge, at 450m deep and 5m wide is one of the deepest and narrowest in Europe. A place of legends and stories, local Sardinians tell of being able to see the stars during the daytime. The gorge is wonderful as we walk along trails under towering walls. After a fantastic day we head to our hotel in Cala Gonone. (5h30 walk, +/- 700m) D4: Mount Tiscali Hike up Mount Tiscali to explore the ancient landscape of the Nuragic. Today after breakfast we transfer towards Dorgali. Along the way we'll pass vineyards and enjoy wonderful views of the ocean. Today we'll discover an old Nuraghe village nestled in a cave in the Supramonte Mountains. A wild and dramatic region of beautiful limestone peaks and deep canyons, the Supramonte Mountains hide an abundance of underground rivers and caves. We walk on a fantastic path carved into the rock face which takes us to the top of Tiscali (518m). Once here we'll explore one of the most important archaeological sites in the region built by the ancient Nuragic civilisation. Little is known about the Mysterious Nuragic Civilisation of Sardinia which lasted from 18 BC to the 2nd Century. The name Nuragic came from the Nuraghe monuments and today there are around 7,000 structures on the island of Sardinia. Today very little remains of the original village, but the atmosphere is extremely peaceful and the area incredibly beautiful. In the afternoon, we will get to the superb village of Orgosolo with amazing murals before heading back to Cala Gonone. (5h00 walk, +/- 500m) D5: The charming Gulf of Orosei, Cala Luna The footpath we follow today sees us exploring the magnificent Gulf of Orosei, one of the most spectacular and unspoilt coastlines on the island. This magical area is pristine and is home to a nature reserve and as we walk on high cliffs, we'll overlook hidden coves until we reach what is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean, Cala Luna. This incredibly secluded beach can only be reached by boat or on foot and after we arrive, we can enjoy some free time to relax and enjoy the views. This light coloured sandy beach is surrounded by lush vegetation, high cliffs and crystal-clear waters, and is a wonderful place to enjoy a swim. In the afternoon we return to Cala Gonone by boat (may depend on weather and sea conditions). D6: Costume Museum – Mamuthones & MaMuMask Festival Transfer to Nuoro and visit of the interesting costume museum where some of the most representative Sardinian costumes are exposed. In addition, there are several rooms where traditional jewelries, archaic musical instruments and typical Sardinian masks are displayed. Picnic lunch. In the afternoon, we will transfer to Mamoiada (15min drive), where there is a curious and interesting museum dedicated to the Mediterranean masks and particularly Sardinian masks, typical of the island’s rural tradition. Visit of a local workshop where they produce those traditional “Mamuthones” masks. We will spend the afternoon explore the local area and feel the local vibes. Transfer to Gavoi (10min drive) for our final night. D7: Gavoi – Cagliari Visit of the local village of Gavoi and transfer to a local sheepfold for the demonstration of the transformation of sheep’s milk into traditional “Fiore sardo”, the Gavoi’s cheese. Lunch in the agritourism and transfer to Cagliari, Group Dismiss and farewell.
